September 7th 1620
My Dearest Faith,
Today has been tough, it is only our first day at sea since leaving Plymouth and it has only been one day since I last saw you, but already the journey is proving very difficult. As you know we had to leave the Speedwell behind because she could not be fixed, so the Mayflower took on those passengers who wished to continue their journey. The hold was already crowded to begin with but now it is twice as grim, we have begun trading rations just to sleep in the hammocks for one night, the hard wooden floors have become beds for most of us. We spent the nights tossing and turning, just like the sea that carries us, wondering why we agreed to take this long and treacherous journey into the unknown, like the sea we drift upon.
